Policy Meetings continue...

On Tuesday, Larry Naake, Ed Rosado and Kim Rogers traveled to Chapel Hill, NC to meet with John Edwards’ Deputy Policy Director Heather McGhee.

McGhee has previously talked with NACo staff regarding rural development and PILT. The meeting served as a chance to further the relationship and to educate the Edwards camp on county issues. We re-emphasized NACo’s willingness to help all candidates and encouraged Heather to use NACo as a resource on everything from research on county demographics to specific issue data to connecting the campaign to our members to discuss the practical application of their policies.

Rebecca Troutman from the North Carolina Association of Counties also attended the meeting. She offered their help as well and will connect with the Edwards campaign on community health care to help reduce chronic disease costs as well as working on the mental health aspect of health care.

This meeting was the fifth in a series of meetings with policy staff of presidential campaigns. Previously, NACo has met with Clinton, McCain, Obama and Romney staff. There is also a meeting on the books with Rudy Giuliani’s campaign for next week.

Also on tap for the future are two presidential forums to coincide with State Association meetings in Iowa and New Hampshire. NHAC is inviting candidates to speak on November 4th in Durham while the ISAC meeting takes place later that month from November 28-29 in Des Moines.
